A New Me

Redesigning Myself

For those of you that have known me for a long time, you know that my photography business used to be called Kandy Kane Photography. Well, that is no longer the case. As you can clearly see, I am now known as Kendall Chance Photography. To answer any questions about why I changed business name, it is simply because I outgrew my last one. I realized that I desired a more professional name and what better name than my own? Chance has nothing to do with me having a “chance” of taking a good photo or anything to do with the dictionary definition of chance at all. Chance is literally my middle name. A pretty cool one at that. In this blog, I will take you through my journey of transforming my business into something new and beautiful and what it is now.

Why did Kandy Kane change?

You may be wondering why all the sudden I wanted to change my brand. It’s quite simple actually, I outgrew the “Kandy Kane” name. Not only that, I wanted people to look at my logo and look at my website and be able to put a face to the name. Even though I have been doing photography since I was 15, Kandy Kane has gone back further in my life than that. Candy cane was the only word I could not say, no matter how hard I tried, when I was just learning how to talk. Other words were not a struggle, it was just candy cane. Now, don’t ask me why this became my name or what the meaning behind it is. There’s no weird metaphor or hidden message, it was just something easy to remember when I needed to make a Minecraft username! That’s it. The K’s were just because I like K’s more than C’s. But, as I started to become more involved in the photography community, I realized that I wanted my name on my photos. Because of this, I decided to start taking steps to redesign what my brand was and how it looked.

Where did I start?

The very first thing I did was discuss changing my brand with my mentor, Tanya Lee Hervey. After talking about why I wanted to change it and what it would be, she suggested that I begin to look for people on Etsy who would design a logo for me. Excited about this, I started browsing Etsy later that day. Now, when you search “custom logo” or “custom branding package” on Etsy, you will get a wide variety of prices. Ranging from $10 for a premade logo that you just plug your name into; all way up to thousands of dollars to get all the custom bells and whistles. As a teenager on a budget, I searched for a branding package that was reasonably priced and an artist who was friendly and had a good portfolio. Eventually, I found an Etsy shop called JustArtinAround that had an $80 branding package that including my main logo, watermarks (in both black and white), an email signature and a business card design. After talking with my logo designer when everything was complete, she gave me a promo code to get anyone 15% off any order! If you're interested in redesigning yourself, please let me know and I'll refer you to her and give you a promo code so you can save some money! Happy with everything it included, I started working with the artist to make my new logo.

The Website

Believe it or not, the website was actually all set up and ready to go before I even purchased my logo. I knew I was going to redesign myself and I knew that a whole website with a completely new design was absolutely necessary. For weeks, I picked away at it slowly. First, I brainstormed what I wanted on my website and how I wanted it to look. My biggest thing was unique simplicity. Sounds like an oxymoron. But, my goal was to have a something that was recognizable and people will see it as mine, but it won’t distract from my work. The solution for me was watercolor flowers. The beautiful flowers would grab people's attention; but by having them only in the corners of my website and they wouldn’t take away from my pictures. Besides the flowers, my website is very white and black. In building this website, the first thing I did was obviously the home page.

The Hook and the Home Page

I need a hook. Something that will draw people in and make them want to stay. This is where the quotes came in. Having quotes from famous photographers would draw people in and I only chose quotes that reflected my work. The quotes will cycle every so often, but there is no pattern. I just want to make sure that something new and fresh makes its way onto the page. The next thing that I used to grab people's attention and keep their attention is my Monthly Bests. If you haven’t voted on which photo you like the best, you should. My monthly best is an attention grabber and I used it as a way to interact with you and other people that visit my website! Currently, it is my all time favorites to celebrate my redesign! However, this will soon be only my best photos from the previous month. After setting up my hooks and a brief about me section, I moved on to design my portfolio.

My Portfolio

My portfolio is a collection of photos that I am extremely proud of. In my all photography career, I have taken thousands and thousands of photos. Out of those thousands of photos, I chose just under 40 to start off on my website. This will obviously expand; but for now, I wanted to just take the clear winners and put them on there. The reason I chose these photos is because I think they show my own personal style, as well as my skill level. From my portfolio, I began to write blogs.

My Blog

This is something very exciting that I have never done before. I have talked about blogging in the past, but I never thought I would have anything interesting to write about. This recently changed as I am starting to actually expand my business and my brand. Photoshoots are becoming more regular and the need to attract attention to my website has become greater. So, I decided it was time to take the plunge and write a blog. My blogs will be coming out on a bi-weekly basis, for now. As I am finishing up on my senior year, school has to be my top priority. In the summer, they will be coming out more regularly. For right now, I have not chosen a day when they will be put out during the week. Until I get more into the groove of writing them and figuring out what day would work best for me, there will be no set day. However, I will be deciding on one very soon! I'm very excited about the content of this blog that will be coming out in the future. I have everything from sharing editing techniques, Lightroom tricks, photoshoot journeys, and challenging myself to learn how to take pictures in new ways, planned for the future. Some of them are even in the process of being written right now! My next blog, however, will be a very special one about how I got my first image published and how it slowly blew up in my small community. So be sure to look out for that one!

My Social Page & Contact Page

These are very self-explanatory. They are places where you can find me! My website is meant to be a hub between all my social media accounts. So, I put all my contact information and social media links on these pages! Definitely reach out if you're interested in doing a photoshoot. Currently, I am portfolio building, so I am looking for tons of models to take pictures of. As a thank you for modeling for me, you will get complimentary prints. So please reach out if you're interested! I will be announcing this further on my social media accounts very soon.

About Me

This page is especially important because it reflects one of my biggest reasons for rebranding. I want to get to know you and I want you to get to know me. I don't want to be seen as some phantom photographer that just posts pictures now and then. I want my website and social media accounts to seem more welcoming and friendly. I also want to get to know people and put myself out there for people to get to know me. So, this page is just a few brief facts about me and an explanation as to why I chose photography. Or more, photography chose me ;). I really encourage you to read this page and get to know more about me!

The Final Touches

There was some fine tuning that needed to be done. Flowers and leaves needed to be added as well as a header and a footer. I also had to work on making a good SEO for Google, which I will not go into full detail with right now. Comment on this post if you would be interested in a blog on that! But none of this compares to the most important final touch. One of the biggest final touches was purchasing my domain, kendallchancephotography.com. This is a huge step for me and it is something that is really helping to commit me to the career and become more professional . I'm so excited for the next steps in becoming more professional and furthering my brand, and I hope you are too!

What’s next?

I have many big plans for the future. Plans about where my business is going to go, where my education is going to go, and where this journey will take me. Where I came from is important to me and I don’t want to forget about it. But I think that this change was necessary and also important. I hope that this blog gave you an insight as to why things changed and how they changed. But this will be the last big change, at least for a long time. From now on, it's just going to be Kendall Chance Photography and I couldn't be more excited about it!
